Intervention

“Programa Saúde da Família” (PSF), a community-based health intervention designed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health to shift primary health provision from public hospitals to family health teams (each team composed of at least one physician, one nurse, one nurse assistant and four community health agents), who are responsible for counseling families in poor areas regarding prevention, early assessment, and treatment of common diseases. The family health teams are based in basic units and the community agents are responsible for monthly home visits to a predetermined number of targeted families.
